Helium inaugurates the group of rare gases in the periodic table. Almost inert, it is the second most abundant element in the universe after hydrogen. It is transparent, odourless and is not a toxic gas. It is less soluble in water than all other gases. Moreover, it is the least reactive element. The density and viscosity of helium vapors are very low, while its thermal conductivity and specific heat are very high. It is possible to liquefy helium. However, its condensation temperature is the lowest of all known substances.

What are the main uses of helium?

• Automotive manufacturing and transportation equipment: Helium is used to test critical automotive parts such as radiators, air conditioning components, fuel tanks and torque converters to ensure they meet quality requirements. Increasingly, it is being used in combination with argon to trigger airbags.
• Scuba Diving: Mixed with oxygen, helium is used in scuba diving to reduce the risk of nitrogen narcosis, facilitate deep breathing and reduce the time required for each decompression stop. Called heliox, this mixture allows divers to reach greater depths and spend more time there. The deeper the dive, the higher the helium concentration needs to be, allowing divers to spend more time welding (on commercial dives) and exploring.
• Electronics: Helium plays a critical role in the manufacture of semiconductors, liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and fiber optic cables. It is used to rapidly cool parts and components to improve capacity, and to control the rate of heat flow to increase productivity and reduce defects. It is also used as a carrier gas in production processes.
• Health Care: Helium is used to achieve the cryogenic temperature of -451 degrees Celsius, which is essential for the proper functioning of superconducting magnets used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and remnography equipment for high-resolution imaging of internal organs and tissues.
• Welding and fabrication of metal products: Since helium is an inert gas and is at the temperature necessary for the formation of the arc in this gas, it is ideal for welding materials with high thermal conductivity, such as aluminum, stainless steel, copper and magnesium alloys. Finally, it is used in heat treatment procedures, such as gas quenching, and for furnace atmospheres to give parts superior quality and tolerance.
